Identifying Supports

It’s important to identify the support system you have in your life before setting your social support goal.

To review the previous session, social supports are people or services who support you in different ways. This could mean supporting you physically, spiritually, emotionally, or mentally. Formal supports are typically provided by community agencies or other organizations. Informal supports come from outside of formal settings. Informal supports may be more familiar with your social needs because they know you on a more social level.

Identifying your social supports allows you to see how much support you have in different areas of your life. Finding where you could use more support will help you set your social support goal. Knowing who in your support system can offer help can also give you confidence and motivation to work towards your goal.

Social Support Goal Check-in

  • Check in on social support goals and how they are going
  • Remember, while peers share their social support goals and how they are going, try listening to learn
  • If you have an idea about what might help with a barrier they are experiencing, ask your peer if they would like an idea or if they only want us to hear about their experiences
  • Next week is our last week. How are you feeling about your social support goal and keeping it going?

After the Workshop Ends

Many facilitators have found that seven weeks goes by very quickly for consumers and many people wish they could continue meeting. Consider a few creative ideas others have tried:

  • Leave the Zoom room or meeting room open after the session ends for consumers to informally hang out
  • Alternate between the Peer Collective and a less structured Peer Support group every other week to extend the workshop timing to 12 weeks instead of seven
  • Plan for a Peer Support Group or other type of group to follow the Peer Collective that consumers can join
  • Have periodic “reunion” events that anyone from the Peer Collective can join
  • Have a list of other community and social activities to suggest leading up to the final session
